a few weekends ago i made a delicious (if i do say so myself) homemade pot pie!
i based my recipe from here: simply recipes
i used the pastry recipe from the website (though i had no shortening, so i just used butter). i also used a sweet potato (or yam...it was one of those white ones) and just frozen veggies, chicken stock, cream, chicken and some spices. the crust was great, even though i didn't make it quite as instructed. i think i need to get some shortening...

You def. need to get some shortening. It makes the best pie crust. (Betty Crocker recipe is the one my mom has used since the 60s and nothing beats it.) Plus, you can use shortening to grease pans and make frosting - easily and cheaply. Shortening cost pennies compared to butter. And it comes in such a large tub, you will have it for years.
kc - you're right. going to put it on my next shopping list!
Oh yum! I personally prefer an all butter crust instead of shortening! Especially when you consider shortening is "something you will have for years" lol...lard shouldn't last that long! Your pot pie looks great to me!
