wedding dilemma #3

dilemma #1 was picking a date. dilemma #2 was cupcakes vs cake (we voted cupcakes).

my mum and i have been discussing the option of having a DJ at the wedding reception. originally, josh and i were under the impression we would ask one of our good friends to do it and a reasonable (CHEAP) price. mum was at a wedding a few weeks ago that had "such a great DJ," so now she's thinking she wants to pay the price for this. they are willing to pay for most of what a "good" DJ would cost, but that means josh and i have to pay for the rest of it...

so there's the dilemma. to DJ or not to DJ. what are your thoughts? is it worth paying that much for a DJ? or should i convince them to use that money on more cupcakes, more bridal shower fun, or helping fund the honeymoon (insert winking face here)? who thinks one of my friends could do just as awesome of a job as a professional DJ??

I think you could get away with having a friend help out. You pick the music you like, they make sure it sounds good and nothing messes up. Seems fine to me!

i think you should invest the extra money into making the honeymoon something spectacular. i think having your friend DJ will make your wedding that much more fun and memorable because your friend is helping making the moment something you will never forget. rather than having someone you don't know and its costing you extra.

but LOVE the cupcake cake thing!

Just make sure they are able to handle mc'ing your reception so your formalities don't drag. The actual playing of music is easy as long as the have good equipment...

yeah i mean . . it's not just about the music . . it's the whole organization of the reception. when stuff happens . . . introducing everyone, etc. . . if you have a friend that is willing to do all of this and feels comfortable, then I say save the money and go for it, but if you'd feel more comfy having someone prof do it and keep it organized, then do that! yay cuppies! :-) who's going to make them?!?!

After workign thousands and thousands of weddings, i can't tell you how important it is to use a profession Disc Jockey instead of a friend. A good professional will always play the music that you and your guests want to hear. They will be eloquent and extreemly helpful at all times. I know Dj's out there who charge up to $3500.00 for a 5 hour show. Be aware on prices. I personally hate a DJ with an over inflated ego. Your reception rides on the entertainment. Your guests will not remember most of the event, except the entertainment. They will remember if they had a blast or not. I like to tell my clients that their guests will leave saying "wow!" So I tried to write on your blog from my phone and it kept taking me to google. I don't get it...anyway...my thoughts. I guess if you pay for a professional, you pretty much know what you are getting, but there is always that chance that it could be not quite what you want. If you have a friend do it, you could save money to use for something else, but you might have to lay it all out for them. This friend you are talking about, have they done a wedding before and do they have their own equipment? I would definitely recommend a layout sheet that you fill out of what songs you want and when you want them played. Also, songs that you don't want played at all. If they know how to use the equipment and know how to read, it could all work out. Was I any help?

It's not just about the music, as Stace says. It's the whole organization of the event.When you are having over 200 people in a place, you are putting on a performance from the moment the bridal party walks in. then each segment is carefully timed to fit everything in the 4 hours. Your friends get to enjoy the wedding. It costs some $ but it is worth it. Especially if you choose someone who is very professional and you trust.

I'm not sure what I would have done without our DJ on our wedding day. He kept us sane and organized. He remembered things that I never would have thought of. He is a friend of my husband but he also is a professional dj here in Erie. He also was awesome at playing music everyone would like and I do mean EVERYONE! We had people at our wedding ranging in age from 2 to 90 and they all were having a good time. I'd highly recommend him if you want his information.

A DJ can make or break your reception. If your mum was at the same reception I was at (I think she and Dad were) the DJ was quite good and made the night fun.

If you want the evening to be a party...the DJ is key.
